Magic spice, or should I say nature’s medicine?
In India, turmeric—our beloved Haldi—finds its way into everything, from milk to every dish we cook.
We can’t deny its countless benefits, and let’s be honest, we simply can’t resist adding it everywhere!
India exports more than $2 million worth of turmeric annually, with Bangladesh, the UAE, and the USA among its top importers.
But with recent geopolitical tensions, Bangladesh’s spot as India’s top buyer is uncertain, while China’s demand is growing steadily. It's an opportunity, which exporters can use it.
Major Importers of Turmeric from India
So, it’s not just us; the whole world loves turmeric! Cultivated over 1.15 million hectares globally, the golden spice produces a staggering 6.4 million tonnes annually.
India, unsurprisingly, dominates with over 90% of global production, followed by China, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand. We also lead in consumption, using over 80% of what we grow. Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia, Burma, and Pakistan are just as fond of turmeric, embracing it in their food and traditional medicine.
According to APEDA, India produced 1.176 million tonnes of turmeric in 2021-2022, up 5% from the previous year. Telangana, Maharashtra, and Karnataka lead the charge, with Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh hot on their heels. So don’t worry, Tamil Nadu and friends—you’re catching up quickly!
