The Role of Krishi Sakhis in Agricultural Advancement

Krishi Sakhis are instrumental in promoting rural development. They act as vital channels for numerous agricultural initiatives, including the National Mission of Natural Farming (NMNF), BioResource Centres, and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY). Their deep-rooted knowledge of local languages, cultures, and agricultural practices allows them to connect more effectively with fellow villagers and farmers. This unique position enables them to bridge the gap between modern agricultural techniques and traditional methods.

Earning an additional annual income of 60-80 thousand rupees, Krishi Sakhis are pivotal to this initiative. The certification process for these para-extension workers has already seen over 34,000 of the 70,000 women certified, highlighting their significance in agricultural extension services.

Training and Empowerment

Krishi Sakhis undergo comprehensive training in various agricultural practices, equipping them to guide and support fellow farmers. Their responsibilities extend beyond agricultural advice; they are farmers themselves, trusted community resources, and connectors between research institutions and grassroots levels. This dual role enhances the dissemination of technological innovations and modern farming practices.

The Krishi Sakhi program, currently active in 12 states during its initial phase—Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Odisha, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, and Meghalaya—aims to leverage the inherent potential of these women. Identified by State Rural Livelihood Missions (SRLMs), Krishi Sakhis are trained to address gaps in rural agricultural services, deeply rooted in their farming backgrounds and communities.

Impact on Sustainable Farming

Certified Krishi Sakhis serve as essential community resources, raising awareness, enhancing farmers' skills, and acting as intermediaries between farmers and various agricultural departments. Their extensive knowledge of agroecology, natural resource management, crop diversity, and nutritional security establishes them as the backbone of sustainable agriculture.

By organizing awareness meetings on natural farming and soil health management, Krishi Sakhis ensure that the advantages of agricultural initiatives reach the grassroots level. These efforts are anticipated to significantly improve the livelihoods of Krishi Sakhis and broaden the impact of agricultural programs and schemes.

Conclusion

Krishi Sakhis are not merely transforming agriculture; they are planting the seeds of a brighter future in rural India. Their dedication is revolutionizing farming practices and empowering entire communities, positioning women at the forefront of sustainable development. As they continue to lead this transformation, Krishi Sakhis are not only changing agriculture but also strengthening the socio-economic fabric of rural India.
